In November, Jesse Mangan interviewed me for his podcast Committable. We discussed my research into the new 988 mental health hotline in the US and its practices of getting calls traced and callers forcibly hospitalized. A 988 number is now also scheduled to come to Canada. Click here to check out the episode.
I have listened to Committable since it first started. As someone who has been committed (needlessly) many times I’m aware that I will always be committable. As a CSA survivor who has not seen my family of origin in over 40 years nothing I have been through has been as traumatic as being stripped (figuratively and literally) of all my rights, from civil rights to my right to bodily autonomy, drugged and locked up just for questioning my doctor. I am so thankful I escaped this cruel carceral institution we call mental health care. Thank you
I hope you are doing somewhat better today. It is brutal to be re-traumatized through detention, restraints, and forced drugging. As you can imagine, yours is a difficult view, message, and story for people who administer or support forced treatment to hear, but I think we agree that everyone needs to hear it.
